MG 48 – Volvo S40 Timing Belt Replacement
Dec 29th, 2009 by mkokes

My volvo S40 has what’s called an intereference design engine, basicly what this means is that if the timing belt were to break the valve would stop moving and would hang in a position that would ‘interfere’ with the pistons path of travel. It wouldn’t really be an ‘oops pardon me while I squeeze by’ type of interference it would be possible broken piston heads and bent and broken valves.

Thus it’s recommend that the timing belt is replaced ever 100k miles, well right now I’m over 120k and I’m nervouse to say the least.

My dad was kind enough to help me out(did most of the work) and we got it done.

Volvo S40 Maintenance Schedule
Aug 6th, 2009 by mkokes

My daily driver is a Volvo s40, I’ve had it for close to 5 years now and I have to say It’s been a solid machine. It’s never broken down on me. The most serious thing that’s come up is an oil leak coming from a bad seal on the turbo, it was under warranty so it didn’t cost me a thing to get it fixed. Aside from that other then routine oil changes, etc. I really haven’t had to do anything to it, it just runs. Well as a result it doesn’t get a whole lot of attention from me.

How Cars Are Disabled For The Cash For Cunkers Program
Aug 6th, 2009 by mkokes

This is pretty cool, kinda sad and a whole lot of interesting. Since the whole purpose of the program is to pay X amount of money in stimulus and the emissions rate of the nation will go down by X percent as a result at the same time money is funneled back into the auto industry. Though it’s not the perfect plan a lot of the cars being purchased are foreign, but that’s not really much of a surprise. The best selling fuel efficient vehicles are the same as they were before any of this started. American cars on the other hand are still being sold, they might be scarce in the top 10, but at least it’s happening. I prefer this approach to just giving money directly to a defunct auto manufacturer. At least the little guys get something out of this too. I still think it’s one of the best government programs to have come out in a long time.
